Sealants

A sealant is a plastic coating that is flowed onto the etched enamel chewing surfaces of the back teeth. This area is very susceptible to decay since the little pits and fissures cannot be readily cleaned with a toothbrush. Sealants are only effective on the chewing surface and will not prevent decay on the sides or in between the teeth. They can also be dislodged by sticky candy. When placed on the teeth of a child who can properly take care of them by avoiding sticky or hard foods, sealants can give a number of years of good service.
